Custom ERP, and why it is not an eighteen-month project
An ERP connects the parts of a company that share the same data: purchasing, stock, production, sales, invoicing, reporting. The classic failure mode is trying to deliver all of it at once. Two years later the business has changed, the specification has not, and nobody has used anything.
We build ERPs module by module, each one in production and used by real people before the next starts. It is slower on paper and far faster in practice, because every module is corrected by actual use instead of by a review meeting.
As with any custom build, this is not the default answer. Odoo, Dolibarr and their peers cover a large share of standard needs, and if configuring one of them gets you ninety percent of the way there, that is the cheaper path. Custom work earns its place when your operations contain rules no configuration screen can express.
